Changing Your Habits: Out With The Old, In With The New

The path to adventure isn't always a clear path, and is usually filled with all sorts of trials and tribulations. This is understandable, because with every adventure you usually have hardships and lessons for you to learn and to grow off of. While often intimidating, these hardships are necessary. They weed out the adventurers who don't want to find excitement baldly enough to go through the difficult times, and make it more rewarding for those who do. But what if you're facing a roadblock that seems much too challenging to conquer? What if you have to change something about your very nature to find the adventure in your life that you are looking for?

At times, a habit can just be a minor annoyance. Occasionally, a habit can be physically or mentally damaging. However, more often than not, a habit is truly a roadblock, and it is preventing you from finding new excitement in this adventure that we call life. My problem, for example, is my bad habit of sleeping in. Since I usually only work in the evenings, I can sometimes end up sleeping all through the day. It feels like a good idea at the time, but then I usually end up feeling sleepier than if I had woken up early, and don't even mention my constant regret of wasting an entire day.

The point is, that our habits are one of the routines we create to make us feel more comfortable where we are, and keep us from searching for new enjoyment. So we should get rid of them, right? Apparently it's not that easy.

According to the results I found during my super efficient 30 minute web search, our brains are actually addicted to the feelings we get doing these bad habits, and just quitting cold turkey can be extremely hard. It's better to find a replacement habit to ween yourself off of the bad habit. With some help from your friends, this can be much easier.

Check out this video by WellCast that pretty much sums it up:

So I suppose I'll be reaching for that coffee in the morning more. Just remember, conquering this roadblock is just one step to getting on the path to adventure. Its a way we can be more mindful about how we live our daily lives, and find enjoyment doing whatever we do.

If you're going to be one of the bold ones, and attempt to change your habits, or even if you're not, I'd love to hear your thoughts or comments down below. I'll keep you posted about my progress as well. Thanks for taking the time to read my post! I wish you all luck in this journey we call life!
