Strengthening Your Mind, Body, And Spirit Through Diet

Want to know the big secret to looking and feeling good? It's something I think everybody deserves to know. You've probably already heard it once before. Well, here it is..

You are what you eat.

Ok, so it's not a big secret. I mean, it's not even technically true, but there is some merit to it. What we eat can affect our mood through the entire day. Most of the fatty, processed foods we see today not only destroy our bodies, but they pollute our spirits, and leave us feeling drained. Think about it, if we did really turn into what we ate, would you want to be the processed, fatty foods we see all around, or would you want to be a superfood?

Superfoods are like the super heroes of food, the food all the other foods aspire to be. They are packed with nutrients, and provide a myriad of beneficial effects. Some have even shown to reduce risk of cancer. So, if you really take the phrase "you are what you eat" to heart, then do yourself a favor and chow down on those superfoods!

Wondering where to start? I've put together a list of my 9 favorite superfoods that will keep you feeling healthy and satisfied:

Kale - This power green is like spinach's bigger, buffer brother. Kale provides nutrients that support healthy hair, skin, nails and digestion, as well as reduce the risk of heart disease. With all of the vitamin A, K, C, B6, manganese, calcium, copper, potassium, and magnesium that's packed in, this leafy green can keep you energized through any adventure. Plus, it tastes great in a smoothie.

Greek yogurt - Tasty and versatile, Greek yogurt has always been noted for its probiotic boost. Besides keeping the good and bad bacteria in check, it's also loaded with amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, and with B12 to give you energy, it's the perfect workout snack. Oh, and did I mention it can also help you lose weight? Yup, with its high levels of iodine, calcium and potassium, Greek yogurt really does it all.

Açai berries - Sort of like a mega stuffed blueberry, this Amazonian fruit is given praise for many beneficial effects. They are even thought to prevent arthritis, inflammation, obesity, erectile dysfunction, neurological diseases, and allergies. These tiny berries are packed with all sorts of nutrients, and provide excellent sources of iron, calcium, oleic acid, fiber, vitamin A, and anthocyanin, a compound known to eliminate harmful free radicals from the human body.

Chia seeds
- Packed with fiber, calcium, and omega 3's, this native Mexican seed provides a tasty, nutty crunch, while defending the body from harmful bacteria and free radicals. Known as one of the most nutritious foods in the world, chia seeds contains some of the highest levels of diverse nutrients. They are even thought to reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Broccoli - Probably the most common superfood on the list, your mom always told you to finish your veggies, mom knows what's best, and now science can back up her claims. Containing phytochemicals, broccoli has been shown to benefit people with arthritis, cancer, immune system health, blood pressure levels, vision, skin health, and blood sugar disorders. While it can be tasty prepared in a dozen different ways, it is actually more nutritious consumed raw, as cooking can destroy some beneficial properties.

Black beans - This heart healthy food is a great way to add generous amounts of protein and fiber to your diet. Black beans have a diverse array of nutrients, including iron, copper, calcium, potassium, magnesium and more, giving them many different benefits. They can maintain healthy bones, lower blood pressure, manage diabetes, ward off heart disease, and even prevent cancer.

Hemp seeds - Hemp seeds have been ignored for their nutritional value for far too long. Unlike cannabis, they provide no psychoactive effect, and benefit the body in a number of ways. It is known as a "perfect protein" food, meaning it not only contains all 20 amino acids, but also the 9 essential amino acids that our bodies cannot make. They also contain an excellent ratio of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, perfect for regulating cardiovascular health and balancing hormones. If you're looking for something to energize and cleanse the body, hemp seed is a great choice.

Cacao - Loved for its great taste and known as an aphrodisiac, this chocolatey treat offers so many great benefits. Cacao is the raw, naturally fermented, version of chocolate, making it a much more potent source of nutrients than your average Hershey's bar. Eating this powerful snack can help improve circulation, lower blood pressure, promote cardiovascular health, improve digestion, neutralize free radicals, and even enhance your mood.

Avocado - This unique fruit contains 20 different vitamins and minerals, including vitamin K, C, folate, potassium, B5, and B6. Low in carbohydrates and sodium, avocado is loaded with heart-healthy monounsaturated fatty acids, known to reduce the risk of cancer. It's high fiber even helps to regulate the digestive system. All in all, this is an excellent choice for making you feel great.

Changing Your Habits: Out With The Old, In With The New

The path to adventure isn't always a clear path, and is usually filled with all sorts of trials and tribulations. This is understandable, because with every adventure you usually have hardships and lessons for you to learn and to grow off of. While often intimidating, these hardships are necessary. They weed out the adventurers who don't want to find excitement baldly enough to go through the difficult times, and make it more rewarding for those who do. But what if you're facing a roadblock that seems much too challenging to conquer? What if you have to change something about your very nature to find the adventure in your life that you are looking for?

At times, a habit can just be a minor annoyance. Occasionally, a habit can be physically or mentally damaging. However, more often than not, a habit is truly a roadblock, and it is preventing you from finding new excitement in this adventure that we call life. My problem, for example, is my bad habit of sleeping in. Since I usually only work in the evenings, I can sometimes end up sleeping all through the day. It feels like a good idea at the time, but then I usually end up feeling sleepier than if I had woken up early, and don't even mention my constant regret of wasting an entire day.

The point is, that our habits are one of the routines we create to make us feel more comfortable where we are, and keep us from searching for new enjoyment. So we should get rid of them, right? Apparently it's not that easy.

According to the results I found during my super efficient 30 minute web search, our brains are actually addicted to the feelings we get doing these bad habits, and just quitting cold turkey can be extremely hard. It's better to find a replacement habit to ween yourself off of the bad habit. With some help from your friends, this can be much easier.

Check out this video by WellCast that pretty much sums it up:

So I suppose I'll be reaching for that coffee in the morning more. Just remember, conquering this roadblock is just one step to getting on the path to adventure. Its a way we can be more mindful about how we live our daily lives, and find enjoyment doing whatever we do.

If you're going to be one of the bold ones, and attempt to change your habits, or even if you're not, I'd love to hear your thoughts or comments down below. I'll keep you posted about my progress as well. Thanks for taking the time to read my post! I wish you all luck in this journey we call life!

A Better Alternative

As eager as I am to leave Texas to travel the states, I know there's a lot of preparation ahead me that could save us a ton of headache on the road. The first bit we've tackled is looking for a vehicle to take us away. This poses a small problem, because my girlfriend, Kayla, wants something BIG and LUXURIOUS to travel in STYLE with, while, you may know from my last post, that I'm all about the SELF-BUILT CAMPER VANS.

Buying a big, luxurious RV means a little more room and comfort on the road, I understand that, but it also means more working to save up for a pricey vehicle and more working to save for travel expenses, which I hate. Having to work more means having to stay in Texas longer in the summer heat, which I hate. Having an enormous RV means more gas guzzling and shorter travel, as well as bigger travel expenses, which I could do without. All in all, wouldn't you agree the camper is a better choice?

While I'm at it, I thought I'd mention that the gas guzzling thing is one of my pet peeves and I am more than willing to put in extra TIME and EFFORT into my project if it means having a better impact on the environment. One of the options I was looking at for a conversion vehicle was an old ambulance with a diesel engine. It had plenty of room for all the amenities and ran great, and also had potential in another way.

Biofuels are starting to gain speed in America, and by providing a clean and economical alternative to petroleum diesel, bio-diesel fuels can help improve our world for future generations. Hemp, arguably being the most versatile plant in the world, can be used to produce one of the purest forms of bio-diesel. It's just a matter of time before we start having to use alternate forms of energy, and hemp bio-diesel is one of the best choices, in terms of our economy.

Through a relatively simple process, you can turn any kind of vegetable oil into a bio-diesel fuel that can be used with any diesel engine. This fuel is a clean alternative to petroleum diesel, and is completely safe to use. If things go as I hope, I will be producing my own, environmentally friendly fuel as I travel the country, doing my part to push for new energy sources.

Here's a video on how to make bio-diesel:

4 Reasons To Live In a Van

Feeling a loss of excitement in your daily activities? Have you been urging to see new places and different faces? Do you catch yourself bored at times and glued to the television autonomously? If so, then you can use some adventure! Traveling gives us a way to spice things up and discover more about ourselves and the world, and there is no better way to cure boredom!

For me, traveling provides an opportunity to experience nature and the beauty of the world up close. I've always dreamed of being in the center of Earth's natural wonders, and the best way I can think of experiencing that would be to live in it! I'm joining thousands of others across the world in a movement to see the world from a new perspective, building my own DIY camper van and taking it all across the country.

If you're curious why someone would go through this trouble for a life on the road, here's a few good reasons:

1. Self-build Camper Vans Provide Ultimate Freedom

Not many things can provide internal fulfillment while also removing us from stressful attachments in our lives (mortgages, car payments, 9-5 jobs, etc.). Camper vans are the ultimate release! By choosing to build and live in your own mobile home, you can experience an enormous weight being lifted as you enjoy life as it should be, one with nature.

2. It's Your Home, With a Personal Touch

How many people get to say they built their entire home from scratch starting with just a rusty old van? There's a powerful sense of joy in finishing something that is meaningful. Especially if it can change your life in new ways. Why not make it a way to express yourself while you're at it? Whether its those solar panels on top, the hand-painted paint job, or the hidden hammock, what makes yours special?

3. Mobility

RVs are luxurious, but not very practical for a long trip around the country. Having a compact home means cheaper travel and more access to beautiful places. While it does require more mindful thinking about what you carry with you, camper vans are the best choice for long travel.

4. Excitement Around Every Corner

Adventure can be a little alluring these days with technology ruling most of our life. Bring back your sense of excitement and meet new people while discovering different cultures! It's not until we put ourselves in new situations that we find our true potentials. Take a trip, and you come back more experienced. Who knows? Maybe you'll find something you've always been looking for.

So would you ever consider building and living in your own travel home? That's one lifestyle I'd love to live! Leave me your thoughts in the comments below. Thanks for reading!
